In a setting that highlights the mystery of an old swamp forest and the excitement of a water recreation area, Pymatuning is one of the finest walleye and muskellunge lakes in the county, and offers excellent camping, swimming, and boating opportunities.

At a Glance: Public access, year-round, no entrance fee. Either an Ohio or Pennsylvania fishing license is required for boat fishing, but bank fishing requires a license from the applicable state.

Fish Found Here: Walleye (year round), Crappie (spring and fall), Black bass (year round, best in May-June), Bluegill (year round), Yellow perch (spring and fall), Muskellunge (spring to fall).

Best for Lake Erie Shoreline Fishing Access

Walnut Beach Park is a coastal access site that feature a wildlife preserve, playground, beach volleyball courts, basketball courts, picnic tables, a skate park, and concession stand. However, the majority of the city-owned park is an expansive foot-friendly sand beach backed by low dunes with beach vegetation. Ashtabula Harbor’s west breakwater is at the east end of the beach. It extends 1.4 miles into Lake Erie and provides fishing access.

Best for Tributary Fishing/River Wading

The Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark has an activity field, woodlands, covered pavilions with picnic tables, and a popular bait and gift shop. The patrons now enjoy birding, field games, fishing, kayaking and canoeing, wading, photography, picnicking, and the numerous popular events hosted by the Friends of the Harpersfield Metropark.
