To Jump In the Lake?

No Problem!  Visit Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula any time of year where the Lake Erie views will still make you jump for joy!

Historic Ashtabula Harbor has come a long way since its days of saloons, brothels and unloading ships with shovels and wheelbarrows.  In the 1800s, this busy port grew exponentially with the completion of the railroads and transformed the ore and coal trade through the Harbor.  The story is best told at the Ashtabula Maritime Museum, in the former light keeper's house at Point Park overlooking the historic region.

The iconic Bascule Lift Bridge, spanning the Ashtabula River, is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It is one of the few still functioning in the country, and lifts every half-hour to accommodate boat traffic.  The Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum immerses visitors in the area's very strong anti-slavery movement.

Today, the historical buildings come to life with unique shops and boutiques, but it is the food that most come to enjoy.  Bridge Street has become synonymous with food that will make your mouth water.  Think of your favorite meal and kick it up a notch.  Briquettes is smoking some of the best BBQ on the north coast, Hilmak Seafoods features fresh catches to eat in or prepare at home, and even the old butcher shop has been reborn as Rennick Meat Market, where the steaks melt in your mouth.

Ashtabula is full of hidden gems.  The longest covered bridge in the United States is located at Indian Trails Park.  Be entertained with talent and creativity at the Ashtabula Arts Center and their summertime Straw Hat Theater.  In the fall, don't miss Brant's Apple Orchard who has hit a sweet note with their fresh apple cider slushies.  Lakeshore Park hosts Lights on the Lake, a drive-through holiday light display that has become a holiday tradition for many families.  The park's special events span the calendar year giving you every reason to visit!

        Mother of Sorrows Church

Mother of Sorrows Church is located about a block away from Bridge Street in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor. Designed by a German architect, the Church enshrines within its walls the tradition of Catholic worship, showcasing sacred beauty with its ornate Roman design. The bell named, "Mary, Star of the Sea", is housed in the bell tower that rises approximately 80 feet. Beyond being a superb piece of architecture, the Church is truly a house of prayer. It celebrates over one hundred twenty-five years of giving praise to God and being of service to the people. Mother of Sorrows Church is on the National Register for historic places and remains one of the most pleasing landmarks in Ashtabula Harbor.

Guided tours are available May 26, June 30, July 28, August 25, September 15 (a free-will offering would be appreciated) 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm.
