What to expect
Lampson Reservoir Metropark encompasses approximately 162 acres, including a scenic 22-acre reservoir just east of SR 45 along SR 307 in Jefferson, Ohio. Originally established in 1906 as a water source for the Village of Jefferson, the property was acquired by the park in two phases—93 acres in 2007 and an additional 70 acres, including a conservation easement, in 2016. Today, the park offers a variety of natural habitats, including wetlands, mixed woodlands, and riparian areas along Mill Creek. Mill Creek borders the park along its northern and western edges before flowing into the Grand River. Just upstream, visitors can find the picturesque Doyle Road Covered Bridge. Plans to remove the Lampson Reservoir dam, developed in partnership with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) and The Nature Conservancy, are intended to improve water quality and restore the natural health of Mill Creek. A recent engineering study also determined that repairs to the existing dam are needed, with work expected to take place in the near future.
- Trails & Access: Limited primitive foot trails with benches and a walking bridge added in 2017; an observation and fishing dock on Lampson Lake; infrastructure funded by a 2015 Placemaking Grant, including a footbridge, boardwalks, fishing pier and ramp, benches, and a kiosk.
- Nature Highlights: Reservoir, Mill Creek frontage, wetlands, floodplain ecosystems, mixed woodland, and proximity to the Grand River and historic Doyle Road Covered Bridge.
- Recreation: Fishing, birding, hiking, kayaking/canoeing, photography, and picnicking. Cross-country skiing and educational experiences may be offered in the future.
