What to expect
Since 1836, Ashtabula Harbor has been a bright beacon to guide ships sailing on Lake Erie. The current three-story lighthouse was built in 1905 of heavy steel plate, much like an old Great Lakes Ore Boat. The structure was relocated in 1916 2,500 feet north on the breakwater at the entrance to Ashtabula Harbor. The Ashtabula Lighthouse was the last lighthouse on Lake Erie to be operated by Lighthouse Keepers until 1973 when it was finally automated
